The Mechanical Corps. On the Trail of Jules Verne @ Künstlerhaus Bethanien
Hip hip hooray! Künstlerhaus Bethanien just celebrated their 40th anniversary, and proved that in Berlin you are never too old to party. Besides the loud and crowded opening of a fantastic exhibition, there were some birthday surprises hidden in the backyard...
...and we are talking about a full-blooded concert! Carnival of Cultures secretly started off a day earlier at Künstlerhaus Bethanien with this once-in-a-decade birthday extravaganza; or at least that was our conspiracy theory.
Oh, and did we mention that it was also the night of open studios?
Alona Rodeh's neon-bathed studio wins all the cool points.
These would suit the walls of Berghain well.

Unclean @ SomoS
Themes that are usually avoided and hidden found their sanctuary at SomoS, in an exhibition which celebrated all things "unclean". A real pleasure feast for the voyeuristic eyes.
Right next to this panting of a lady and a dog urinating, there was an animated video of a lady copulating with an elephant. +5 for the thematic consistency.
+15 for the seamless sitting spot (galleries take note! All that mingling ain't easy.)
The smokers sat at the entrance of the building and the Späti next door instead, making it look like a trendy place to be.

Jeffrey Wallner - You Know How I Get @ Das Gift
For the last eight years, Jeffrey Wallner took pictures of people and places incidentally, mostly in Minnesota. The result is this is fun show, almost like a diary, that gives you a feeling of guilt if you look at it for too long.
Too bad that the shows at Das Gift last only for one weekend; otherwise this would certainly be a show to recommend. Jeffrey's raw, honest, fun photos go well with the bar atmosphere; both have that magic ability of being ugly and beautiful at the same time.
No people were harmed during the making of this photograph!

Dan Stockholm - Humans Construct @ Grimmuseum
This is why we love openings at Grimmuseum! The atmosphere in the garden that faces the street in one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in Berlin is always so uplifting. It does not take a lot to get totally overcrowded there, but then again - the more the merrier.
One great side-effect of the popularity of the garden is that the gallery gets totally empty. No need to stand on your toes, sneak like an animal, say "sorry" on repeat while stepping on every foot on your way to see that one piece in the back of the room.

Berlin Independents Guide is an artist run communications platform.
