2021 ODYSSEY

2021 ODYSSEY

Here is a short  version of a long story on reducing an artworks carbon footprint while still making (most) of the deadlines. From Andreas Greiner: " In July 2021 I decided to re-produce the AI-Video-Work 'Abschied' (Harz) for an exhibition in Cologne (Ursprung @odyssey_aspace). The work consists of 64 LED modules that are produced and shipped from China. Given the means of production and materials I at least wanted to choose the most environmental friendly means of transportation which in this case is by ocean freight. This decision led into a 4,5 month long experience of uncertainty. Not only was the work not ready in time for Cologne - the materials arrived only 2 weeks before the current exhibition in London with Dittrich&Schlechtriem*. I had promised my gallerist that the work will be there for the opening but the schedule to finish the production, meet custom regulations for Britain and to ship the finished work to London was extremely tight. I decided to take the 50KG wooden frame and structure of the work myself in the most carbon friendly route: By train: Berlin - Bruxelles - London (=easy in my head).
Saturday 9am I got kicked out of the Eurostar train to London - reason: my luggage was too big!
Sadly my final route over Calais and Dover and especially the ferry, spoiled my ambitious carbon footprint goals. I am still very thankful and happy for everything that I learned in those 4,5 months - especially the last 2,5 days of travelling - all the people I met and places I could see."

On view in London in the group show #new-to-nature with @julian.charriere and @juliusvonbismarck on #9CorkStreet until November 20th. Presented by @dittrichschlechtriem and @friezeofficial

Fri, 19 Nov, 19h "BLOCK 57 IM FOKUS" Scotty Space - curated by Sigrun Drapatz and Florian Wüst

BLOCK 57 is a typical Kreuzberg block between Oranienstraße, Luckauer Straße, Sebastianstraße, Dresdener Straße and Oranienplatz. It serves as a model for the eventful history of a neighborhood in which living and working are close together. The neighborhood is still characterized by the alternative period of the 1980s, in which work, grassroots organization and political identity accompanied each other and experimental ways of life were explored. In addition to the evidence of “clear-cut renovation”, residential restoration and cautious urban renewal, the history of labor migration contributes to the appearance of the district: This year marks the 60th anniversary of the German-Turkish labor recruitment agreement.

GERRY JOHANSSON + JOHAN RÖING | PHOTOGRAPHY AND SCULPTURES

Dorothée Nilsson Gallery is pleased to present the group exhibition Photography + Sculpture with works by Gerry Johansson (Photography) and Johan Röing (Sculpture). As a symbol of continuity and timeless aesthetics, sculpture enters a stimulating dialogue with photography, which by its very nature aims to capture the momentary and the ephemeral. The geometric lines of Johansson’s black-and-white photographs are continued in Röing’s colorful sculptures, creating a system of reciprocal intervention.

Etel Adnan (1925–2021)
“The morning after
my death
we will sit in cafés
but I will not
be there
I will not be”

Constantly shifting between genres, materials, mediums, and her multiple artistic roles, Lebanese-born Etel Adnan explored and pushed forth ways of working colour and form since the 1960s. Using memories of her childhood in Beirut, and the physicality and emotiveness of the natural world, (particularly the mountainous landscape of California) as references for her abstract small paintings to tapestries, like her contemporaries, Adnan is a master of colour. Her work can, through semi-representational blocks of paint, exude recognisable shapes translating as universal imagery and therefore force us to look and see the world differently RIP to the great artist, philosopher and poet •
