Wasserspeicher
The underground water reservoirs (known as Grosser and Kleiner Wasserspeicher) in the Pankow district of Prenzlauer Berg have been empty and abandonded since the reservoir closed down in 1914. In 1994 Kulturamt Pankow and the Förderband Kulturinitiative e.V. formed a partnership to start hosting cultural events in the underground reservoirs. The spatial quality of the large water reservoir lies in the circular juxtaposition of rings with idiosyncratic acoustics: reverberation times of up to 18 seconds and echo effects that are different at each point in the vault. The small water reservoir is reminiscent of a crypt in its column and vault structure and has relatively even reverberation times of 4 to 6 seconds.
Since 2014 the underground rooms are available to free projects that want to approach the topic of space explorations with their artistic potential. The rooms are open to all forms of artistic expression that accept the premises of these special architectural spaces and the concept of use.
