REITER
Established in 1999 by Torsten Reiter in the city of Leipzig, Reiter Gallery was founded at a time when the unique artistic talent of former East Germany was rapidly increasing in visibility. In the first years Reiter exhibited the works of now well-established artists Aichinger and Junghans, working respectively in painting and photography. Since then the gallery has continued to expand along with its artists: in 2004 the gallery (under its former name: Maerz Gallery) was one of the first galleries to take up residence in the historical Baumwollspinnerei, the industrial estate that lays at the heart of Leipzig’s vibrant art scene today. Continuing to grow with the strength of young artists in the region, Reiter Gallery expanded with the establishment of a second gallery, Reiter Berlin prospect, in 2009. Set in a historic pre- war building in the Mercator Hof, Potsdamer Strasse, which once formed part of the daily newspaper buildings of Der Tagesspiegel. Today it is an important district on Berlin’s art map, hosting some of Berlin’s strongest commercial galleries, project spaces and institutions. Working across these two unique exhibition spaces, Reiter Gallery continues its earlier commitment to showcasing strong and independent artistic positions, while also working closely with a younger generation of artists. The gallery’s artists and relations constitute some of the strongest international artistic positions in painting, sculpture, photography, new media and installation.
