Tips 08.05 - 10.05
The huge Gallery Weekend fuss is (finally) over; some are already nostalgic, others relieved. It still does not mean that all of the galleries in Berlin took a break. On the contrary: there are still places to go, things to see, people to meet!
THURSDAY 08.05
19.00 Anonymous Drawings Project
WHY: The project presents 300 drawings by Berlin-based artist, collected through an open call. The selections were chosen anonymously, without looking at the artists' names on the reverse side of the works. The artist's anonymity can only be revealed by a sale: the buyer takes the drawing right off the wall, and the empty space left behind will be marked with the artist's full name.
Anonymous Drawings Project / Schwedter Str. 232, 10435 Berlin, U Eberswalder Str. / ongoing until 12.05 / free entry / more info
FRIDAY 09.05
18.00 Jesse Garcia - Trial & Error @ Kinderhook & Caracas
WHY: Artist and producer Steven Warwick is presenting the inaugural exhibition of the works by Jesse Garcia. An artist and filmmaker working across photography, political documentary and mixed media, Jesse Garcia passed away last year leaving ongoing projects and a largely private body of photography work behind him, to be shown for the first time in Berlin along with various objects and ephemera he created or collected in his lifetime.
Kinderhook & Caracas / Kreuzbergstr. 42e, 10965 Berlin, S + U Yorckstr. / ongoing until 07.06 / free entry / more info
19.00 Susanne Schirdewahn - May I Portray You? @ Haus am Lützowplatz
WHY: For two years the visual artist and writer Susanne Schirdewahn asked cultural workers for an unconventional portrait session in her studio. The interesting thing was the link between interview and painting, which turned both the interview and the classic portrait situation upside down. With a lot of movement, triggered by the lively conversation and a certain penchant for drama, direct and humorous color sketches have emerged.
Haus am Lützowplatz / Lützowplatz 9, 10785 Berlin, U Nollendorfplatz / ongoing until 08.06 / free entry / more info
19.00 It Is Only Natural, Of Course - NYU Berlin @ SAVVY Contemporary
WHY: The show uses the location of the gallery to ground its guiding idea inspired by Thomas More: "Your utopia is my reality and my reality is your utopia". Part of the mission at SAVVY Contemporary - creating dialogues between western and nonwestern art - is used as a starting point in questioning notions of identity formation and the relationship between authentic and constructed experiences through actions of revealing and concealing the past and present.
SAVVY Contemporary / Richardstrasse 20, 12043 Berlin, U Karl-Marx-Strasse / ongoing until 13.05 / free entry / more info
19.00 BIEST - Zaunkönig @ OZEAN
WHY: BIEST thinks body and space. The concepts which BIEST develops in fashion, architecture, design, art, and interiors, follow a search for the need for genuine nature, knowledge, and contour. BIEST expands the debate on the redefinition of the boundaries between public and private spheres , visibility and invisibility, and focuses, almost in the tradition of Daniel Buren, on what is attempted usually while looking at the exhibitions in OZEAN.
OZEAN / Schleiermacherstrasse 31, 10961 Berlin, U Gneisenaustr. / ongoing until 18.05 / free entry / more info
19.00 Cut Ups - A Collage Show @ Schillerpalais
WHY: Schillerpalais presents an exhibition around the theme collage. In this framework, works by the seven artists - Dan Daughters, Rozenn Le Gall, Patrick Fürli, Christian Elixmann, Isabel Ride Meyer, Heike Weber and Stefan Schneider - show how the collage has now become established in the scene. In this exhibition, minimalism and total overlay are just as opposite as collage and decollage.
Schillerpalais / Schillerpromenade 4, 12049 Berlin, U Boddinstr. / ongoing until 18.05 / free entry / more info
SATURDAY 10.05
19.00 Martin Pfahler - Imprinting @ Vincenz Sala
WHY: With his architectural sculptures, Martin Pfahler takes the built environment under the microscope. His works, which are to be read as a specific reconstruction of urban areas, leave the purpose limitation of architecture and raise fundamental questions, such as the symbolic function of architecture.
Vincenz Sala / Helmstedter Str.8, 10717 Berlin, U Guntzelstr. / ongoing until 07.06 / free entry / more info
