From popular culture’s appropriation of and obsession with spirituality, to the rediscovery of ancient practices outside doctrinal order, spirituality has many faces in the modern world. Practices like yoga, meditation and witchcraft, once the domain of traditional cultures and searching hippies, have become mainstream. The trend towards ‘spiritual but not religious’ speaks to a growing number of people alienated by religion, who still harbour an interest in the sacred dimension of experience. There is widespread interest in spirituality, evidenced by the incredible success of The Guggenheim Museum’s exhibition “Hilma Af Klint: Paintings for the Future”, which has officially become the most-visited exhibition in the museum’s 60-year history. Art critic Ben Davis partly attributes the massive public interest in the show — beyond usual art audiences — to a rising interest in esoteric practices like witchcraft and the occult. The artists exhibited in ‘Beyond Belief’ offer different points of access into the world of spirituality: some invite us to dive into mystical experiences, some deal with spirituality as a stage for identity, and still others critically reflect upon the societal implications of spiritual practice. Also included are artworks that represent earlier waves of spiritual interest in the 1960s and the 1980s, including works by Georges Braque, Joseph Beuys, Georg Baselitz, Mary Bauermeister and Antoni Tàpies.
