Wed, 3 May 19h at alpha nova & galerie futura: Never relinquish the streets!
Discussion on the history of the right of assembly with Elke Steven (sociologist) and Katharina Gamm (lawyer for criminal law), moderated by Cornelia Herfurtner
What are the consequences of the application of paragraph 17a (§17 a VersG) on social movements and protests? And what practices oppose the restriction of democratic rights? This discussion will focus on the history and present of freedom of assembly in the FRG. On the one hand, we will talk about how the freedom of assembly has been repeatedly attacked. On the other hand, we will look at the strategies and ideas people in social movements have developed to enforce assemblies.

further events this week:
Friday 05.05. // 15:00 Berührungen und Selbstschutz? Inclusive art education with Katrin Dinges (artist and cultural educator)
Together we will encounter the exhibition in an unusual way: with our fingers and hands. How do we feel images?  What ideas does this kind of perception evoke in us? And what role do (shared) touches play in our lives? Through touch and conversation, we will address these questions – and of course, also any questions you have.

Thu, 4 May 18-21h at einBuch.haus Opening of Jeong Hwa Min: ma-eum: Wandering Minds
For the first edition of the picture book ma-eum: Wandernde Gemüter in German, einBuch.haus invites the illustrator Jeong Hwa Min to a solo exhibition.
ma-eum is a series of paintings in which the artist collects and documents ma-eum* that exist within her but have been forgotten, hidden, or neglected. The process of numbering the ma-eum, taking note of their condition, and documenting their proper storage is similar to the process of collecting to create a personal herbarium. The Korean word 마음ma-eum means heart, mind, and spirits in English.

*ma-eum:
1. The character or personality of a person.
2. Feelings and thoughts that arise in or are triggered by another person or thing in a person.
3. A space or place where a person’s thoughts, feelings, memories, etc., originate or settle.

on view until Jun 10th

The exhibition title (French: circus tent) already characterizes the artistic idea Christian Hellmich and Matthias Moravek are playing around with: Their paintings and sculptures are all dealing with aspects of the imaginary and illusionary, be it mysterious or clown-esque. Let the magic happen!

On view until May 27 at Galerie EIGEN + ART Berlin: Olaf Nicolai I never look at you from the place from which you see me
The exhibition "I never look at you from the place from which you see me" by Olaf Nicolai presents a series of photographic works taken in June 2022 in Olympia, Greece.
The motifs are the landscape and the historical facilities of Olympia - but in anamorphic and floating distortions. They were created using a parabolic mirror - the mirror used to IGNITE the Olympic Flame by the sun's rays.

On view until May 27th Yalda Afsah: Curro at Between Bridges Residency Space:
A series of cuts mark the uneasy climax of Yalda Afsah’s Curro, an exhibition culminating the inaugural Between Bridges residency. The show debuts the fifth installment in the Berlin-based artist’s series of films concerned with ritualised interaction between men and animals. She has dedicated her practice to these human-animal relationships since 2018. Conceived as an installation across two rooms, the film is split into parts which are displayed in a fence-like framing structure and viewable from a rounded bench both constructed for the space and reminiscent of the physical entrapment depicted in the film. The structure also resonates with the film’s title, a Galician term for fencing something in. While Curro’s snipping scenes could conjure a score of symbolic associations, it lands less as metaphor here than as the pinnacle of a brutal and domineering frenzy. A kind of literal power grab.

On view until July 1st  at Dittrich & Schlechtriem Opening of Andrej Dúbravský: Anxiety of Subimago

Dúbravský presents an empathetic yet critical study of the environment and its progressing devastation. The Anxiety of Subimago points to an unresolved tension between humankind and nature, resulting in frustrating restlessness akin to an adolescent subimago state—a winged preadult life stage of the delicate-looking mayfly. Over a layered wall, an installation of molted studio canvases, Dúbravský presents a series of new large-format acrylic paintings on canvas with sweaty renderings of huddled running bodies paired with deserted landscapes and small-format portraits of pollinating bees and insects in varying states of metamorphosis.

Tashi Brauen: Cover the Blank Spots at Ronewa Art Projects

Since Ronewa’s first collaboration with the Swiss-Tibetan artist in 2017, Brauen’s practice has covered photography, relief sculpture, works on paper and cardboard, and now painting on canvas – always led by an inquiry into reduction. He has explored reductions in pictorial space, materials, process, and color. The minimalist abstract paintings presented in Cover the Blank Spots could be considered the logical conclusion of this search.
