Here is a list of cool stuff to visit on and off the beaten path. For the purposes of this list we concentrated on one time events, 2-3 day pop ups and openings that get the good good crowds. Wednesday is usually my favorite day with the most chill, group openings, Thursday and Friday… save yourselves.

Under a grey blanket 9.-19.11.1984
Old World Apes.
A film essay and publication launch by Rick Buckley & publisher Slimvolume, London. Presented at the historic location of the former US forces Outpost Cinema.

“To better understand civilian life on the threshold of the Iron Curtain, on the morning of 9 November 1984, at Gatwick Airport equipped with an Olympus OM-1 SLR and Super-8 camera, I boarded a British Airways flight to Berlin Tegel”. The images that appear in the pages of the publication were taken over an eleven-day period in East and West Berlin. These images along with incorporating super-8 film and CGI sequences transferred to 16 mm film stock, form the framework for the 20 min narrated film essay of the same title, culminating in a Psyochgeographical re-mapping of the city of Berlin during its Cold War period.

Thu 27 Apr, 19-21h for a listening session with @moshabangu at @theinstituteforendoticresearch
Worlds. Listening session arranged by Mohammad Shabangu
Meditating upon the notion of borders, belonging and unbelonging, the writer and critic Taiye Selasi proposes a concept called Three R’s –Rituals, Relationships and Restrictions–, a useful prism from which to consider the transnational character of individual and collective identities. Inspired by the idea of Three Rs as an organizing principle, this listening session explores the processes of deep and light listening postures by curating a mosaic, if musical pieces that express a preoccupation with human affection and relationality. Working with a fluid and diachronic blend of music ques from around the world, whether it is sprawling atmospheric synths by electro soul band, the healing properties of spiritual jazz; the notes of a classical piano that accompany moments of solipsism, or the distinct echoes of hypnotic North African chants, you are invited to explore the in(div)isible boundary between the literary and the sonic.

Fri, 28 Apr 18:-22h at Pop-up gallery GILL: BETWEEN THE BREATH AND THE SILENCE

“Between the Breath and the Silence“ explores feelings that exist in the unexpected spaces of our experience between harmony and chaos, freedom and restriction. Deeply interested in dreams as a conduit for unspoken feelings and desires, Gill paints imaginative, unconventional and at times seemingly illogical compositions that assert the power of the unconscious and dreams. Featuring vibrant colours, intricately layered detail and large scale, striking formats, Gill has created a collection partly inspired by repetition and patterns that occur in nature, dancing between our conscious and subconscious worlds. His work conjures the emotions within that inhabit the silent spaces we experience in private, whether awake or asleep. Where Gill presents tension, he offers the possibility to find peace.

Opening hours: 14:00-18:00 (or by appointment)

Fri, 28 Apr 18-21h at Dittrich & Schlechtriem Opening of Andrej Dúbravský: Anxiety of Subimago

Dúbravský presents an empathetic yet critical study of the environment and its progressing devastation. The Anxiety of Subimago points to an unresolved tension between humankind and nature, resulting in frustrating restlessness akin to an adolescent subimago state—a winged preadult life stage of the delicate-looking mayfly. Over a layered wall, an installation of molted studio canvases, Dúbravský presents a series of new large-format acrylic paintings on canvas with sweaty renderings of huddled running bodies paired with deserted landscapes and small-format portraits of pollinating bees and insects in varying states of metamorphosis.

Fri, 28 Apr 18-21h at Ronewa Art Projects Opening of Tashi Brauen: Cover the Blank Spots

Since Ronewa’s first collaboration with the Swiss-Tibetan artist in 2017, Brauen’s practice has covered photography, relief sculpture, works on paper and cardboard, and now painting on canvas – always led by an inquiry into reduction. He has explored reductions in pictorial space, materials, process, and color. The minimalist abstract paintings presented in Cover the Blank Spots could be considered the logical conclusion of this search.

Extended opening hours during Gallery Weekend: Saturday 29 & Sun 30, 11am–7pm.

Sat, 29 Apr 13:-18h at L40 Opening of Elephant’s Memory (Memorial Structure)
Inauguration of Raphaela Vogel’s fantastic pavilion “Elephant’s Memory (Memorial Structure)”

The latest sprout from the multidimensional cosmos of the artist brings space and time together in its own intense presence. And yet, in a strange way, it is anchored in a past that is related to the context of the presentation and the artist's own biography. Once again, what Claudia Aigner says about Vogel's work in the Wiener Zeitung (2022) applies: "You don't always know what you see, but looking away is not an option."

Sat, 29 Apr 16h at Dittrich & Schlechtriem: Toxic Man, Champagne Performance with author Frédéric Schwilden

Writer Frédéric Schwilden reads from his newly released novel “Toxic Man” (Piper-Verlag), drinks champagne, and chats with art critic Silke Hohmann about genuine drugs, wrong guys, and genuinely good art.
His father dies, he gets married. His biggest photography exhibit to date opens in Cologne. The narrator is on the verge of his breakthrough as an artist. His wife is having their first child and falls into depression. His cousin drinks to the point of organ failure; his best friend disappears into the sea. He himself butts his head against the wall until he passes out. And then?
“Toxic Man” is an autofictional story about escaping the terror of the middle class, about self-invention, self-presentation, and near self-annihilation.
The reading will be in German language.
