Eat the rich

Eat the rich

Here is our amuse bouche to start off the newsletter this week! The Schröder Haus gets digitally vandalised by artist Michalis Zacharias in his current show AUTHENTICALLY APPEALING at Ileana Tounta gallery in Athens. On view until July 31st.

The following might or might have not happened in a city far far away called, let's say, Perlin: Eager to keep up with “current trends” and “socio political sensitivities”, to be “woke”, you know, a gallerist in this magical town, asks one of his male artists- because as luck would have it, this is the only kind of artist he had: male ones. So he summons his male species artist and asks him to introduce him to some female artists to diversify his roaster. Prey tell oh you Penis, do you happen to know one of these “so called under-looked”  and “under-appreciated” female species artists; I heard they sell now. Our male artist obliged and over the following months presented the mighty gallerist with any and all female artists he encountered, including one who, at that moment was transitioning to be a man.

Oh not that wont do. The wise gallerist said, I have enough men.

OPENING Sat, 26 Jun, 18.00h -- KONTEMPLATIVE RÄUME (CONTEMPLATIVE SPACES): Kiki Gebauer, Timo Kahlen, Klaus Kühn
Klaus Kühn, Partiturausschnitt

Kiki Gebauer, Timo Kahlen and Klaus Kühn dedicate their works to the theme of reflection. Named ‚trapeze‘ by Kiki Gebauer, polygonal white panels float high up in space. Their coloured backs reflect on the ceiling and walls of the exhibition space: finely gradient colour nuances that constantly change depending on the incidence of light. In ‚Holding My Breath‘ by Timo Kahlen, a fragile, transient, iridescent soap bubble becomes an intimate space that – in times of pandemic – embraces and preserves the artist’s breath until the bubble bursts. The musical work „For Morton“ by Klaus Kühn essentially consists of algorithmically generated, variable sequences of sound groups, played by the flute, which imperceptibly condense and are reflected by live-controlled electronics to form sounds that move in space.

In this panel discussion, GCC founding member Louisa Buck will be joined by artist John Gerrard, NFT curator Sha Li, Devang Thakkar from Christie’s, and researcher Charlotte Kent to discuss how NFTs may impact attempts to reduce carbon emissions, and explore possible sustainable solutions in the short and long term. Zoom link here. Closed-captioning in English will be available.

No bullshit note: The art world excels in alibi- hey- we -care- talk and this does seem to be nothing less, but since NFTs are unexplored territory ( where the environmental impact does seem to be disproportionally big ) I thought I would include this event here. I am curious if Gallery Climate Coalition will turn out to be anything more than a PR tool. You can listen in and tell me if Christie's representative had something valuable to add to this discourse.

TRANSFORMATION X ∙ FIONA KELLY at Temporäre Galerie on Campus Rütli

If you havent yet visit www.stimmenmeer.com: The website is designed around eight female figures and invites women to tell their own versions of the proposed stories. Fiona Kelly and other female artists propose text, image, video, music or textiles workshops, through which potentially ∞-many more diverse stories can emerge. These stories are held together by the water-woman-figure KORO - the SeeH spider on site at the Temporäre Galerie, on view until Friday.

Until June 25th, 2021/ Open daily, 10-17h
