Throughout its history, the Volksbühne has defined and broken artistic boundaries in all disciplines, such as acting, directing, stage, costume, video, lighting, visual arts, music, and all other trades. The history and aesthetics of the theatre are characterised by the invention of new theatre practices, the use of cinematic means, and a radical redefinition of artistic space. The Volksbühne is all about tradition and its redesign.

Since 2021, author and director René Pollesch and many others has taken over the theatre, which focuses on music, performance, film and discourse in addition to drama and dance in its ensemble and repertoire programme.
