Maithu Bùi: From Battlefields to Roborders
Galerie im Turm presents the first solo exhibition of Maithu Bùi from Battlefields to Robertorders. The exhibition explores the (increasing) usage of artificial intelligence and automated decision-making systems in border security. Central to the exhibition is a new animated video work by Bùi, developed through extensive research in collaboration with Ahmad Katlesh, Petra Molnar, Khoi Nguyen, Sinthujan Varatharajah, and Vanessa Vu. The exhibition from Battlefields toRoborders comprises a video work generated with a game engine, 18 research posters, and an expansive room installation. It examines ‘smart’ borders, particularly Europe’s external ones, and highlights the planned use of fully autonomous systems there. These systems range from biometric data collection and algorithmic ‘risk assessment’ to automated voice recognition. from Battlefields to Roborders addresses, among other topics, the violent origins of border technologies in war zones, exemplified by sensors that ‘migrated’ from the Vietnam War to the Mexican border. The critical analysis focuses on the lack of transparency, legal regulation, and control mechanisms regarding the usage of these Galerie im Turm Frankfurter Tor 1 10243 Berlin technologies. What happens when error-prone algorithms assign language dialects to places of origin and make decisions based on this – who monitors these decisions? Alongside technology, policy and migration research, Bùi explores the power of personal storytelling. Created collaboratively between the artist and journalists, legal and technology scholars and allies, fromBattlefields toRoborders brings visibility to often obscured realities in conflict zones and border areas. Through this act of resistance and solidarity, the work contributes to shaping a different world.
