OPENING NEXT WEEK SIMON MULLAN: SPACERS from Monday, 5 Jul 2021 – 28 Aug 2021
Deindustrialization has transformed sites of strenuous physical labor into décors: the service companies that moved into vacant industrial structures in West Germany starting in the 1970s and in East Germany starting in 1990 use the relics of a bygone era to deck out their craft brewery-cum-culture centers, dance factories, and colliery restaurants. Machines gather dust in the corners whose erstwhile purpose is a mystery to almost everyone, giant rust-covered cogwheels rest on the floor, and the instruments on massive valves of some kind are forever stuck at zero. And yet something is spooky: what has become of the people who used to work here?-- text abstract by DANIEL VöLZKE
