KAUFHAUS DER WORKING CLASS DAUGHTERS
KAUFHAUS DER WORKING CLASS DAUGHTERS

STARTING WED OCT 20TH 18-21H @DISTRICT_BERLIN: KAUFHAUS DER WORKING CLASS DAUGHTERS, a performative installation with artists/organisers: Karolina Dreit, Kristina Dreit, and Anna Trzpis-McLean
working class by daughters is the final part of a fashion trilogy. Started out with the design of a t-shirt collection within a fashion show without models and followed by a Eastern European market inspired car boot sale, we are now opening up a department store. A space for stories about class. How are the obvious structures of inequality and its subtle constraints, e.g. how one talks or what one wears, how are habitus and taste interwined in individual biographies? We counter the discrete charm of the bourgeoisie with the obvious. We are exposing what is supposed to stay hidden and state it boldly on t-shirts: working class by daughters.

ON ART AND SUSTAINABILITY
Via our friend Carson Chan ( now Director and Curator of the Emilio Ambasz Institute for the Joint Study of the Built and Natural Environment at MoMA). Already well known for her use of brick (see her 2018 Serpentine Pavilion @serpentineuk), Frida Escobedo is developing with Oxara, a Swiss start-up creating sustainable concrete from landfill waste. Escobedo is designing new facilities for a women run mezcal producer in Oaxaca, for which her office and Oxara developed an adobe brick made from local mud mixed with the liquid and solid mezcal making waste. 12 bottles worth of vinaza (the acidic liquid-waste) is produced from every bottle of mezcal. It turns out that combining this with bagazo (the fibrous solid-waste) makes a stronger, more flexible (earthquake resistant) brick. A mezcal factory made out of mezcal waste…!

Most artists, especially at the beginning of a gallery relationship, negotiate from a bottom line of my Work Sucks I Cannot Believe Someone Will Buy This Shit Please Take It Out of Here and Keep it Gone. Trust me; I have been there. But this is how you will lose works, money, and your labor rights. Of course, no one will hand you a manual the minute you land your first representation, but if they did, here is how it would start: Keep track of your work, stupid. Read here
ok ok it is funnier if you know the people involved (which I do); but this story has everything, fraud, forgery, bromance and betrayal, the FBI, Los Angeles villas, Pamela Anderson and the WRONG shade of blue. Read here and here
