Transparent Translation

Transparent Translation

a performative exploration into the communication of spatial perception of other species by Linda Franke

Spiders use their spatial silk constructions like a giant ear. The webs pick up vibrations, and when they sit on them, they are able to pick up vibrations over a far distance. Just by feeling the net, they are able to judge things like the size, weight, and possibly even the nature of a  creature. Bees use an internal sky compass, which allows them to orient themselves with respect to the position of the sun. Both the direct sunlight as well as the polarization pattern of the sky and its spectral gradient can be used as reference cues for orientation

Through a sculptural connector the performers will engage in a nonverbal communication experiment. They will translate what they see, hear, smell and think into motion, send this information to a resonating receiver, and translate their perception into an audible signal.

The performance aims to simulate different spatial perception mechanisms employed by other species.
