Stefan Sehler THERE, PARTS

The motif of clouds is not only present in the history of art, but also maintains historical lines of succession from astronomy and the history of science in general to the structures of capitalist and neoliberal society.

In his solo exhibition, Stefan Sehler experiments with the image of the cloud as an argument in its own right. Quasi immaterial and to this day incalculable, it is the ideal motif for his images, whose representational nature turns out to be apparent upon closer study. In doing so, he plays with the premises of contemporary painting and, using art history as a necessary foil, develops a series of light, floating images of nature.

This is painting understood as a completely autonomous medium. The fact that the entire artistic process takes place backwards because the pictures are painted behind glass and thus the foreground and background are created in reverse order, ideally connects the means with the motif. Both at the same time prove to be a uniquely suitable image for the mobility of visual thought; for the ease with which an image calls up existing mental connections, clouds others and suggests new ones.
