Poşe Çilingir Sofrası

Çilingir Sofrası in Turkish is the name of a lunch/dinner quickly prepared with light mezes and a glass of rakı. However, in urban literature, Çilingir Sofrası tells another story: after an arduous night of drinking rakı, men would return home very late at night and see that their wives wouldn’t let them in, and so they needed to call the locksmith. Hence the name of this communal occasion is called Çilingir Sofrası – The Table of Locksmith. Rakı can be seen as the master key for deep, insightful, long lasting and honest conversations. One has to be prepared emotionally and physically to sit at a Çilingir Sofrası firstly because rakı is a strong drink and secondly because once you start sipping your rakı, you will have no lies to tell. poşe was created as a conceptual and physical open space to enhance dialogue within the creative community because we believe that dialogue has a direct impact on today, yesterday and tomorrow. By carrying this motive of creating a space for dialogue to an event in Berlin, poşe will host a communal Çilingir Sofrası. By inviting a community of artists who have migrated to Berlin from Istanbul within the last decade, poşe will become a platform to talk and discuss curated topics on why and how these artists decided to move.

poşe is a borrowed Turkish word from French. It is derived from the verb pocher and means to sketch, to mix, to poach. Established in the spring of 2018 by artists Öykü Canlı and Larissa Araz, poşe is an artist-run space in Kadıköy, Istanbul that was conceived with an urge to establish a local community. It is an open space for those who feel the need for dialogue and critique, and a meeting place for thinking, trying, doing, failing, re-thinking, re-trying and re-doing, etc.
