No Future on Mondays

Screening, curated by Bettina Munk/Lines Fiction

To kick off the new year and the new annual theme Material, SCOTTY is pleased to present the screening No Future on Mondays curated by Bettina Munk and her project Lines Fiction.

There is something archaic about material. Unformed, raw and unshaped: It seems to be that from which all life emerges and into which it returns. An eternal cycle in which the material changes, takes on new forms, colors and shapes, never remains the same and never fades. What life of its own does material have, beyond the forms we see in it? Is there any unformed material at all, which is only matter, pure becoming and passing away? (…)

„No Future“ was the Kreuzberg attitude to life in the eighties. No Future meant: We ignore the past, and we are taking the present now. In the middle of the Cold War, the future was obscured by medium-range missiles in East and West. So we danced on the volcano and made no plans.
Do you recognize in art how difficult times are?
The digital revolution of the media makes the analog images from the 20th century appear at a great distance:
Super-8, the poor material of the film amateurs, typically scratched pictures with soft outlines and off-color, contrasts with brilliant images in the computer of the 21st century.
The films in this exhibition arc from the Super-8 film format to algorithmic computer animation:
A Super-8 crime thriller, schooled in Expressionism with its mood in divided Berlin and Jean Luc Godard with its quick cuts, and complementary computer animation based on a script with random modules, drawing on the tradition of John Cage.
In addition, a kaleidoscope of videos and computer animations by Bettina Munk and international artists from the Lines Fiction archive will be presented, showing the full range of artistic films in 2022.
The presentations are shown in turn in the large window and on monitors in the gallery, from Thursday to Saturday a journey through time.
