Installation: Women

The event takes place within the framework of ASSEMBLE, curated by Adela Yawitz and Anna Gien. ASSEMBLE is a new series of Performance art commissions for art institutions throughout Berlin. Its monthly events move through art venues, adding live artworks to the institutions’ regular programs. Amy Ball’s new performance and video installation continues her current research into gendered codings of space and architecture. She looks at aesthetics and social rules of private, interior rooms as well as public, outdoor spaces, and selects characters and sub-communities that exist in between these divisions. She develops strategies of ‘feminizing space’ that unravel traditionally male aesthetics such as modernist architecture, motorbikes or machines as constructed expressions of masculinity. For Women, Ball presents a new video piece shot in Canada’s remote Yukon territory, where she grew up. The video pairs the region’s expansive landscapes with a masked and anonymous dirt-biker. The rider’s relationship to the natural terrain forms the backdrop to Ball’s layering of language and sound in her live performance.
