Der Raum überwindet Zeit und Mensch

Ipek Burçak, Daniel Gustav Cramer, Audrey und Maxime Jean-Baptiste, Andrea Pichl

The exhibition takes its title from the copper relief Der Mensch überwindet Zeit und Raum (Man Overcomes Time and Space) (1971) by Walter Womacka on the Haus des Reisens (House of Travel) in the immediate vicinity of Alexanderplatz. Framed by planetary motifs such as water, birds, and tree branches, the relief’s center depicts a cosmonaut and two humans whose dynamic gestures point upward-left toward a blazing sunmoon.

From Alexanderplatz along Karl-Marx-Allee in the direction of Galerie im Turm, there are further references to the so-called Space Age (from 1957), such as a Sputnik satellite sculpture on Café Moscow. The relief’s title sums up the human-centered self-regard of that time, which was based on a belief in technological progress and growth – a self-regard that continues to this day.

The exhibition presents artistic works that render stories beyond the prevailing historical narrative visible and that raise the question of comparable dynamics in the present.
