CUTUP

“There is only one thing a writer / can write about: / the fear he might lose something.” CUTUP is the first exhibition of poet and multimedia artist Annelyse Gelman’s Heck Land: The Resorted Text, a lyrical reworking of William Burroughs’ seminal novel Naked Lunch: The Restored Text. After meticulously scalpeling the original text, Gelman appropriated its vocabulary in a series of surreal, aphoristic visual poems that address identity, anomie, and the act of creation. These works conjure a chimeric, imaginary author, neither Gelman nor Burroughs – a voice that, until now, had no way to speak.
