A 37 90 89 — The Invention of the Neo-Avant-Garde

The Exhibition Project: A 37 90 89. The invention of the Neo-Avantgarde will be dedicated to the project space A 37 90 89, founded in 1969 in Antwerp, which decisively influenced the development of project spaces around the world, serving as an example for later models of alternative project spaces, producer galleries, and joint initiatives. The artists and curators involved in Antwerp at the time are today some of the most outstanding representatives of the neo-avant-garde. Taking the 50th anniversary of the founding of Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.) and of Antwerp’s A 37 90 89 as an occasion, by representing and examining the historical project space Projektraums A 37 90 89, the social transformations around 1968/1969 will be reconstructed and made productive and relevant for us today. At the same time, the history of Neuer Berliner Kunstverein is linked to the activities in Antwerp and beyond by way of a collaboration with the project space After the Butcher, a bridge to the present and Berlin’s project spaces today. Curators: Marius Babias, Florian Waldvogel Artists: Carl Andre, Stan Brakhage, Robert Breer, James Lee Byars, Marcel Broodthaers, Daniel Buren, Hanne Darboven, Jörg Immendorff, Arthur Köpcke, Robin Page, Chris Reinecke, Tomas Schmit, Ben Vautier, La Monte Young / Marian Zazeela, among others
