Zwischen zwei Abgründen- Reading and Screening

»Zwischen zwei Abgründen / نيتيواه ريفش ىلع« / reading (Arabic/German) Ataya is asked to recount his memories for a documentary. As he talks on camera about the war in Syria, about fleeing first in his own country and then by boat across the Mediterranean, the boundaries between reality, magic and fantasy become blurred. In "Between Two Abysses", Abdullah Alqaseer tells an impressive story of empathy and trauma, of arriving in a foreign country and living on from the past. Abdullah al-Qaseer and Stefan Maneval will read together.

Adnan (German/Arabic. OmU), 24' - Short Film

Told from the perspective of an Arab family father in a small East German town, Alqaseer's intelligent satire takes aim at racist clichés and thought patterns. Following the bilingual reading and film screening, Abdullah Alqaseer will talk to Stefan Maneval (Uni Kiel/Falschrum e.V.) about his experience as a refugee, his film and life and writing in exile in Germany.

SUNDAY,  8.12 - 18h
Mahjong workshop with Faye Dudukovich
Game night (Hong Kong style)

Despite nineteenth century origins in Chinese courtesan houses, the game of mahjong has far exceeded its inception, with variations of the game extending from Japan to Taiwan to the United States to international military bases. In its original and most streamlined form, the game is a fast paced tile game similar to gin rummy, though with an exponential scoring system that has made it a popular choice for gamblers. Most striking about the game is its power to build community; though there are locales and cultures in which mahjong is strictly for men, it has become a mainstay for matrilineal relationships and women's subcultures. Mahjong possesses unique qualities in both its cultural influence and its gameplay that make it a particularly successful setting for creating fast bonds and establishing a positive sense of self. Join this workshop to learn more about mahjong's history, contemporary burst in popularity, and, most importantly, learn how to play!
