When You’re Calmer Berlin

When You’re Calmer Berlin, Booth 53 @ Platforms Project 2024
“Love as Resistance“ (Linda Weiss) curated by Wendy Calmer

Wendy Calmer (When You're Calmer Berlin) is pleased to announce the participation in the independent art fair Platforms Project Athens. The installation ”Love as Resistance” by Berlin-based artist Linda Weiss will be displayed. Starting with an examination of writings on love by the theorist bell hooks (”all about love”, ”salvation“, ”communion“), a conceptual mix and homage to the beginnings of hip hop has been created from images and text fragments. This is just the beginning of a journey of encountering discourse and its power of transformation through love and music. It is also a questioning and learning about what enables or prevents action in love. bell hooks considers the act of loving as an action and form of resistance. According to the artist La Roka aka Rokafella (Bronx New York), hip hop has given self-love back to the community and is, in her eyes, the continuation of the civil rights movement.

Linda Weiss (based in Berlin and Leipzig) studied fine arts at the University of the Arts Berlin (free class, i.a. Harun Farocki) and completed her studies with an MFA at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig. Most recently, she took the course “Becoming Lumbung“ with “ruangrupa“ at the Salzburg International Summer Academy of Fine Arts. She has been a scholar in artist in residence programs such as the “International Studio & Curatorial Program NY“ and the “Multimedia Art Museum Moscow“. Linda Weiss has received numerous grants and has been invited to exhibitions like the documenta fifteen, the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, the Torrance Art Museum LA, the Platforms Project Athens, the nGbK Berlin, the Scharpenberg Gallery Chicago, the Kunstverein Wolfsburg, the Royal Academy of Arts London, the Kino Arsenal Berlin, the Sculpture Center NY and apexart NY. Her works are represented in collections such as the MoMA NY, the Smithsonian Institution Washington, the Moscow Museum and the Museum Folkwang Essen.
