The film series “Viet – Duc” is about people who come from the Vietnamese diaspora in Germany. They have many different backgrounds: East and West Germany, North and South Vietnam. The films reflect migrant social context and living situations, communication between generations, many-layered problems, but also everyday life and new sets of values.
Four films will be shown: two short films from 2020 made by filmmakers, and two short films from 2021 that arose in the framework of a workshop with young people.
Jackfruit, 2020, 34 minutes, by Thuy Trang Nguyen, graduation film, International Filmschule Köln, was shown in festivals in Germany and the US. In a series of brief encounters, the film tells of the life of a gender-fluid person from a migrant family in Berlin, and is one of the first works from a queer perspective that is contextualised in the Vietnamese community in Germany.
Gehrenseestraße 1, 6 minutes, 2020, by Duc Ngo Ngoc. The film follows Nguyen Anh Tuan back to the abandoned acommodation complex at Gehrenseestraße 1, where the protagonist lived as a child with his mother. Nguyen Anh Tuan vividly describes the feelings that moved him in that period.
Wohnen auf Zeit, 8 minutes, 2021, by Jasmin Phan, Gerda Müller, and others. The director, Jasmin Phan, and father, Thao, revisit the period of his arrival in Germany 40 years ago. Tracking back into her own family history, Jasmine learns more about her father and the period of reunification from the perspective of a former contract worker.
Erst nachts konnten wir traurig sein, 8 minutes, by Melanie Nguyen, Jenny Nguyen, and others. 1987 – countless Vietnamese people arrive in East Germany to work as contract workers and build up a new life. One of them is Nguyen Thi Le. On her 60th birthday, she remembers back to the beginning of her time in Germany – a period marked by loneliness, homesickness, but also hope.
The workshop was accompanied by professional Vietnamese-German film and media experts and led by director Duch Ngo Ngoc, who himself is the son of Vietnamese former contract workers.
The screening will be followed by a conversation with the filmmakers. Moderation: Angelika Nguyen
