Spice Clock
For her first solo exhibition in Berlin, Spice Clock, at Scotty Enterprises, Jasmine Justice looks at ways to navigate the overabundance of material and information that the world offers up.
She brings her paintings together with non-static configurations: collages, assemblages, drawings, and everyday scraps. The shared space of the objects and paintings becomes a virtual conveyor belt, transporting the information and images from our everyday world into a specialized painted one. But it’s not just an activity of refinement. The small sea of collage and works on paper surrounding the paintings stands guard, ready to receive any rejected fragments that might be spit out as an act of re-birth or regression.
Justice comes up with her image hybrids by borrowing established painting styles and merging them with stripped down diagrams or found photographs. Recent graphics such as pie charts and stock market reports are emptied of their original content and then re-used, converted to partially disintegrated ruins, templates for the viewer to superimpose his or her own collection of ideas, facts and experiences.
