Featuring an international line up, the show focuses on analog collage, rather than digital outputs, and the physicality of cut paper becomes resonant for a culture that lives under the rule of the Smartphone. Similarly, an interest in visual concordances and associations, both physical and representational, can be found in the work of these artists. But there is also a rawness often at play, a desire to force elements together almost as a gestural act. It’s a subtle thing but might point to the way in which collage is perhaps now about protecting the person from the onslaught of images. We could say it’s a kind of enchantment, making concrete the endless overwhelm of visual circulation. And in this sense, it is also a strategy for survival.
