Running Hot and Cold

In their first collaborative institutional exhibition Running Hot and Cold, Polish paintress Wera Bet and British artist Paul DD Smith will present works that investigate the effects of the voyeur's gaze. Utilizing the theme of bathers as a focal point for their artistic research, the artists explore a genre of imagery that invites viewers into intimate spaces where bodies are either exposed in vulnerability or engaged in performance and posing. Drawing inspiration from art history, such as the narrative of 'Susanna and the Elders', as well as contemporary instances of voyeurism where Smith becomes the subject of Bet's paintings the artists navigate a complex interplay between sharing one's life generously and adopting a defensive stance to deflect intrusive scrutiny.

Wera Bet and Paul DD Smith live and work in Berlin.
