Peter K. Koch Norm Connect Modul Feld
This is Peter K. Koch’s sixth solo show with the gallery titled Norm Connect Modul Feld. The title alone eludes clear semantic interpretation, recalling instead an additive use of seemingly unrelated terms. This also holds true for Koch’s new works, which, as with previous series of works, resist easy categorization and classification as to specific genre.
His new works also operate between genres, translating painterly techniques into three-dimensional space through an experimental use of materials, thereby mutating into image-object. Here the material is processed in a variety of ways: folded, cut, glued, painted, and stacked.
Constructing and taking away, reducing and linking, thematizing what’s absent, merging together the vulnerable and fragile with the simple and striking can be considered Koch’s primary avenues of interest. The outcome is a perfection of the imperfect that might be described as poetic minimalism.
The focus of Peter K. Koch's work is not the representational but the imaging possibilities and conditions of the material itself. In doing so, he purposely conceals narrative structures: “I’m not a narrator, but a creator of images.” Koch also expresses in his work his “penchant for bewilderment”: the material characteristics of the work remain uncertain until closer inspection. Viewed from a distance, the color and form appear flawless; examined in detail, the objects reveal their material peculiarities and clear traces of artistic production.
Peter K. Koch (b. 1967 in Cologne) studied at the Hochschule Niederrhein in Krefeld. After teaching for eight years at the Dresden University of Fine Arts, he has worked as a professor of creative design at the University of Applied Sciences Europe in Berlin since 2015. The artist lives and works in Berlin.
