ON WATER
The hyenas pursued
Those fleeing
The fear of the black death
Drove us into the boats
Yasemin, Cyprus (poem from „Flowers Whispering“ series by Sigrun Drapatz 2008/2014)
At present over 50 Million people are on the run in the world. As a result of the current political situation, the threat of war and terrorism in large parts of the world, the issue of migration and the risky situations refugees are living through are impossible to ignore.
The title On Water refers to the insecure situation of the migrant. Literally it might refer to the Mediterranean, as the transition route to Europe. The axis which on one side is a metaphor for a vision of freedom, but in reality can function as a moat around the 'castle' of Europe. Where one could argue: having reached the promised land, is the risk of drowning any less immediate?
Being different in their artistic approach and outlook, the dialogue of the works shall open up tensions, space for ideas and critical thinking about the different issues of migration: the history, the personal aspects, about today; and about how it is to be „On water“.
Along with the presentation of the artworks an additional screening of short documentary films, accompanied by talks, dealing with the same issue is going to take place on December 4th.
