Red Gumball machines are the basis of the interactive group exhibition Micro Books — Gumball Universe. The gumball machines become micro museums and book dispensers. The capsules do not distribute gum but the smallest books in the universe. In this rendition, artist book publishers and intergenerational visitors are invited to take the micro-book as a format and concept under the magnifying glass and thereby, become a part of Gumball Universe. Why Gumball machines? They are nostalgic machines. Everyone knows them from the urban neighborhood. By now, they are a dying species—like kiosks, newspaper stands, or advertising pillars.
Gumball Universe positions the mechanical dispensers in a new cultural context as culture dispensers. In contrast to digital reality, the Zine-O-Mats distribute artwork. Zines are artist books. Zines stand for empowerment, gift economies, and solidarity.
