Jörg Dedering: Queer Artists Portraits of the queer art scene
Jörg Dedering
In 2022, Jörg Dedering presented an extensive series of portraits of Berlin artists with a solo exhibition and the book Berlin Artists (Revolver Publishing). Continuing this work in a new series, his focus is now on queer artists. The show Queer Artists presents portraits of very different personalities. Many of those portrayed left their home countries to escape the discrimination, everyday prejudice, and oppression they experienced due to their sexual identity. With this series, Dedering wants to show, among other things, how enriching queer people are for a colourful and diverse art scene and also for society as a whole. With his work, the photographer takes a stand against the increasingly strong right-wing extremist tendencies in large parts of society – because it’s not queerness that stands between us and threatens us, but the intolerance towards diversity shown in word and deed. Dedering sets his often very personal portraits against this ‘stigma of the stranger’, creating an extensive series about queer artists based in Berlin and elsewhere.
