Into the Open 2025: Rituals
Into the Open 2025: Rituals, the interdisciplinary festival that redefines classical music through innovative artistic collaboration. The six-day event, which will take place from 28 January to 2 February 2025 at Berlin's Kühlhaus, offers a series of rousing performances from the fields of music, theatre, dance, multimedia, and visual arts.
Themed Rituals, the festival explores the universal significance of ceremonies, from ancient traditions to contemporary practices, and provides a platform to celebrate the intersection of personal and collective experiences. The programme includes six shows, including three world premieres commissioned exclusively for the festival; a line-up of world-renowned artists such as accordionist Martynas Levickis, pianist, composer, and DJ Francesco Tristano and Georgia's renowned Sokhumi State Drama Theatre; a diverse range of art forms, including experimental electronic music, immersive installations, and theatre productions.
Highlights of Into the Open 2025 include:
- Martynas Levickis' (Lithuania) opening concert on 28 Jan: The magic of Levickis’ ‘Box of Tricks’ accordion as he bridges the gap between classical and contemporary, playing works by Bach, Vivaldi and Philip Glass, as well as the world premiere of collective MAL(A)K(h)UT(h) by Hugo van Rechem.
- Narcose's (Germany) A Pageant on 29 Jan: An all-female band delivers a satirical rock performance that blurs the boundaries between music and narrative.
- VukuvukuPhila!'s (South Africa) installation performance on 30 Jan: The duo presents an impressive mix of visual art and live performance that explores rituals in contemporary contexts.
- Bach & Beyond by Francesco Tristano (Luxembourg) on 31 Jan: The visionary pianist combines the timeless works of J.S. Bach with his own electronic compositions, embodying the innovative spirit of the festival.
- Big Gay Cartoon Machine by Alex Paxton (United Kingdom) on 1 February: A lively jazz-electronic fusion performance that is as whimsical as it is ground-breaking. (world premiere)
- Closing Performance: Stravinsky's (France) Le Sacre du Printemps on 2 February: A unique fusion of classical piano duo and the dynamic energy of Parisian krump dancer Germain Zambi against a backdrop of ritual transformation.
