In Short: Almost a Fairy Tale- Family narratives and the construction of history
Snapshots – that capture the moment
Documents – that retain and create memories
Images – that represent memories and give them significance
The objects of this exhibit are the families of each of the three participating artists.
Their families are representatives of countries which are historically intertwined: Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Israel.
By the examination of memory itself, of family narratives, documents and artefacts of family history, the artists weave a multifaceted net that explores personal recollections in context of factual and public history. The exhibit is composed of documentary work side by side with the artists’ creative interpretations. This exhibit is part of the official Berlin art week programm.
The artworks:
Shown is a geographical map with marked locations, the stations in the lives of people presented in this exhibit. Their lives’ journeys are tied to historical events, political systems, war and the seeking of refuge. They document the time between 1915 and 1991.
The map depicts the paths of each family in this exhibit, often crossing and overlapping.
The theme of Andrij Bojarov‘s work are memories of his mother’s stories about her coming to Breslau during the second world war as a soviet army nurse in 1945.
The center of Erhard, Rosemarie and Sigrun Drapatz’s work is the time between 1957 and 1961. Two young people happen to meet and exchange addresses. A love story develops, shaped by the post war period in a separated Germany, Poland and the Cold War.
In their creations Michail, Lev and Maria Pomiansky/ Vadim Levin deal with three generations of the soviet utopia of a better future. Michail Pomiansky’s painting depicts a Russian partisan being captured by German troops as a heroine. Maria Pomiansky’s work “Kassiopaia” contends with the child’s futuristic dream of a better society in space.
