In Between Dreams

Stefan Guggisberg, Igor Hosnedl, Madeleine Roger-Lacan, Brett Charles Seiler

Does “in between” mean betwixt and between or in the midst? A “there”, a site, but where? Or is it here and there, torn in between? That would indicate a transition period, a “not anymore” and at once a “not yet”. A dream is also a “nowhere”, not materialized and gone instantly.

Under the title In Between Dreams, Stefan Guggisberg, Igor Hosnedl, Madeleine RogerLacan and Brett Charles Seiler present new works at Galerie EIGEN + ART Berlin. All of them suggesting that the dream knows no limits and can take countless forms.

Stefan Guggisberg (*1980 in Thun, Switzerland, lives since 2004 in Leipzig) creates surreal worlds with his very own way of working, sometimes colorful, sometimes monochrome and never quite to be located. This relates to the fact that Guggisberg exposes morphological forms from a sheet which he has thoroughly colored beforehand using various tools. Oil paints are layered on top of each other and then peeled off again, leaving behind formations that challenge our perception as we look at the paintings.

The figurations by Igor Hosnedl (ě, Czech Republic, lives and works in Berlin) have a similar approach. His nets seem to be people and plants in one, their limbs overlapping and crossing, their color reminiscent of the night: the time of bizarre reveries. Yet as alien as Hosnedl's motifs seem, they capture the viewer in a familiar and sensual way.

Madeleine Roger-Lacan (*1993, lives and works in Paris, France) takes us into her daydreams. It seems as if her lively and colorful images are desires that, as it were, address the power imbalance of the existing gender relationship and are meant to show how togetherness could also be. Roger-Lacan sets no limits to her imagination and thus encourages us to follow her example.
Brett Charles Seiler (*1994, lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa) also pays great attention to the representation of dreams to be realized. His wedged male bodies are sensual, harmonious and warm. In his art, Seiler creates a space outside the rules to explore the body, sexuality, taboos and emotional vulnerability.
