DIGITAL DIALOGUE Margret Eicher in conversation with Stephan Berg

The exhibition “Margret Eicher. Lob der Malkunst” is a cooperation with the Museum Villa Stuck in Munich and the continuation of the project in the artist's adopted city (born 1955 in Viersen). With her digital tapestries, Margret Eicher evokes the nimbus of an art form that has developed primarily in the context of courtly representation. This special form of textile art has meanwhile been almost completely displaced by its bourgeois variant, wallpaper; but tapestries evoke strong material iconographic associations that refer to the original functional context. The so-called picture knitting, to which Margret Eicher's artistic practice has been based since 2000, has been demonstrable in Europe since the High Middle Ages.
