Dorine van Meel’s forthcoming exhibition at Decad considers the construct of nation states and national identity in Europe as vehicles of destructive force, enabling the deadly reality of barriers and a harmful illusion of binaries. Van Meel’s video Beyond the Nation State I Want to Dream combines computer-generated images of sites crucial to the history of imperialism and capitalism. Among others, these include the Berlin Conference of 1884; Fort Elmina, the first European settlement in West Africa; and the now-demolished statue of J. P. Coen in what once was Batavia.
