MICHELLE SUI: Behalf iii

Doors at 19h, performance at 20h

A room opens into the street. Many voices try out for a role already set. The third chapter in artist MICHELLE SUI's Behalf series. Behalf is a multipart performance developed by MICHELLE SUI while in residency at the Museum of Contemporary Art. The first two parts––a ballet and film––explore role-playing, lip-syncing, and Oriental cinematic archetypes. The third chapter is a site-specific piece developed at Xanadu with a cast of local Berliners.

MICHELLE SUI is a multidisciplinary artist, performer, and filmmaker. Their work exists at the intersection of theatre, dance, film, vocal music, oral history, audio and new technologies. It draws upon cinematic histories, language in translation, the performance of femininity, and the dislocations of memory. Their immersive multimedia work spans films, operas, dances, and interactive installations, presented throughout the U.S and internationally. Michelle's decade-long research in women's folk music traditions has taken them to study and perform in many post-Soviet landscapes of Eastern Europe and the Caucasus. They are known for their vocal performance work that merges choreographic and vocal improvisations, have taught embodied voice techniques at University of Michigan, University of California Irvine, and Loyola Marymount University. They have recently performed and/or been in residency at MOCA, Walker Art Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music, LA Music Center, REDCAT, Hammer Museum, Marciano Art Foundation, Atlantic Center for the Arts, La MaMa Umbria, Rubin Museum of Art, and Park Avenue Armory. Their work has received support from the Foundation of Contemporary Arts, Center for Asian American Media, Sundance, Rauschenberg Foundation, California Arts Council, New York Foundation for the Arts, Bang on a Can, Poets and Writers, and the Leslie Scalapino Award for Innovative Women Performance Writers.
