and a Super Blue Moon

“Supermoon” is a term, or more specifically, a branding, of relatively recent origin. It originated not from astronomy but astrology; first coined by an astrologer, who arbitrarily defined it as "a full moon which occurs with the moon at or near (within 90-percent of) its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit (perigee)."

Indeed, at 12 noon ET on this fifth Wednesday of August, the moon will arrive at perigee, its closest point in its orbit relative to Earth at 221,942 miles (357,181 km) away. And the moon will officially turn full 9 hours and 36 minutes later. Although a full moon theoretically lasts just a moment, that moment is imperceptible to ordinary observation, and for a day or so before and after, most will speak of seeing the nearly full moon as "full": The shaded strip is so narrow and changing in apparent width so slowly, that it is hard for the naked eye to tell whether it's present or which side it is.

This is also the second full moon in August; we witnessed the first on August 1st. Where did the first supermoon find you, and where will this second “blue” supermoon shine on you? I hope you enjoyed this month, bookended by full moons, because September will be B U S Y.  Back to work, back to school, and, of course, Berlin Art Week.

Thu, 31 Aug 18-22h at Changing Room Explaining Taxonomy to a Bird by Simon Faithful

a Book Launch, a filmed Performance-Lecture + a casual Artist Talk over drinks
7 pm Viewing of a performance-lecture filmed within the Berlin Natural History Museum's Bird Collection. //Premiere! 36 mins
8 pm Casual Artist  Talk + a Q&A over drinks

Berlin's Naturkundemuseum feels like an almost infinite library of life on this planet. Its millions of specimens form a kind of cathedral of Taxonomy – an attempt to name, to categorize, and to 'box' all the entangled diversity of life. 'Explaining Taxonomy to a Bird' is a series of artworks that came out of a 6-month residency within the Museum's collections – specifically the museum's 200,000 dead birds.

At Changing Room two late outcomes from this research will be launched - a book and the Premiere of a performance-lecture filmed within the Museum's Historic Bird Collection. Both seek to destabilize and question some of science's bombastic certainties, and to reflect upon how humans have designated themselves as a category apart from all the other species they share their planet with.

Thilo Droste / Juliane Zelwies
Is happiness measurable? What decisions determine the course of our lives and our life plans? What external factors influence our lives? Thilo Droste and Juliane Zelwies are looking for answers in their collaborative exhibition FRAGEN ÜBER FRAGEN. They invite visitors to ask themselves questions from the World Happiness Report and thus become part of an experimental arrangement to define the happiness factor in the context of art and life on Berlin's Brunnenstraße.

Fri, 1 Sep, 19h opening at SCOTTY CROSSLIGHT Katinka Theis, Benedikt Terwiel, Charlotte Bastian
Add to my map

CROSSLIGHT is a light that intersects the path of another light, illuminating what the first one leaves dark. It is meant to reveal a yet unlit perspective on a topic or an object and is indirectly shedding light onto something that can become a new source of knowledge. Katinka Theis, Benedikt Terwiel and Charlotte Bastian explore the transformation and perception of landscapes. Each individual approach can be understood as crosslightning its different aspects as much as the combination of the three positions is emphasizing differences in its comprehension. Light plays herein an essential role, both figuratively and literally.

Sun, 3 Sep 13-18h at Jägerschere Opening: Was hast du für große Ohren Add to my map
featuring the work of Sujatro Ghosh, Julia Kissina, Corinna Theuring, Puck Verkade
Zoomorphism, the depiction of that which is human through the lens of that which is animal, is arguably as old as art itself.  The history of art furnishes us with many iconic examples. However, a standout one has to be Charles Le Brun’s Physiognomic Heads, those 17th-century drawings that to this day disturb us with their casual collision of form and psychology. This association of animalistic features with human psychological traits has become deeply encoded into our culture; we find it in children’s literature, in advertising, in Netflix fantasy series.  Some contemporary artists are, however taking Zoomorphism in another direction, rejecting simplistic psychologies and looking instead at the critical and political uses of Zoomorphic imagery.  This new exhibition at Jägerschere gives us a chance to look at what some of those possibilities are.

Until Sept 6 at BBA Gallery: Markus Rock “Chimera”

Add to my map

Photographed in 2019 at Uferstudios, Berlin, “Chimera'' plays on perception and imagination. The bodies of Julia and Siri - uncanny in their resemblance -  are a projection surface where individuals influence how parts of the body combine to form unusual organisms. Upon closer inspection, the Chimera dissolves back into a recognisable collection of disconnected limbs. In the manner of the mythological Greek Chimera, the two figures in the  black space of the photographs merge together at bizarre angles. The boundary of the individual is blurred and absurd creatures are formed. The incorporation of dance and extreme physical proximity differentiates these photographs from his previous work. Intuitive and emotionally driven, “Chimera”’ is a testament to the transformative potential of human connections that goes beyond verbal communication.
