What Did I Miss

The Bigs team was on two fronts last week. Although the Venice Biennial deservingly stole the spotlight, we're still sharing some interesting bits and pieces from what we visited in Berlin.    FRIDAY 31.05 Annette Sonnewend @ Scotty Enterprises +3 for Pussy Riot meets Nina Katchadourian...

MONDAY 20.05 RUIN Martin Eder @ Volksbühne THURSDAY 23.05 Berlin.Status.2 @ Künstlerhaus Bethanien Kunstlerhaus Bethanien looked like the hippest bar on a Saturday evening. It was impossible to navigate through the space so crowded, and you probably lost people you came with on the way...

FRIDAY 17.05 Anish Kapoor @ Martin-Gropius-Bau The press conference that preceded the opening wasn't so helpful to people who wanted to get some answers about the artist's work from the artist himself. Anish didn't bother much to provide those, like many others when they reach a point of success...

Gallery Weekend came and went, leaving Berlin more self-confident, definitely warmer and wondering about the same old/new questions: "Can someone please explain why, in 2013, Oscar Murillo's work is remotely interesting to people?" asked former Computer Art Wonderboy on his fb wall... We are unsure...

What a week! The massive Gallery Week roster ensured that there was plenty of good, definitely some bad, and always some ugly. Hopefully our survival guide and sneak peak helped you make some well-informed decisions about how to divide your time, but now it’s time to reflect on everything we saw and did. This...

With the overwhelming events and openings for Gallery Weekend on the horizon, this week’s warm up may not have taken us to a large quantity of places, but we sure got around geographically. From an exclusive tour in Wedding, to openings in Kreuzberg, to a concert in Moabit, to openings in Prenzlauerburg and...

This was a great week in Berlin, and I don’t think any explanation of why is necessary. While en route to EIGEN + ART on Thursday, I noticed that there were a lot of attractive people around, and I wondered where they all came from. I realized then that they had been here all along, but a smile on the face (in...

It would be nice if there was, at least, a degree of geographical congruity within the discordant Berlin art scene. Alas, the sprawl is seemingly inebriated. On the up side, even if no one wants to hear about your increased knowledge of the city's gallery-cooridnates, newfound bus-route savvy is sure to win some...

An A4 poster in the front window of a Mitte gallery caught my eye this week, on it were 2 images paired next to one another: the most recent Vernissage of the gallery itself – guests, few. The other of the tightly packed queue outside of the Hamburger Bahnhof on an opening night with the following caption...

This week the Former West conference brought some of our favorite theory all-stars to the Haus that soon became a second home. The unacceptable weather made us more inclined to sitting and listening than moving from gallery to gallery but no regrets! We also managed to make it out to Arts Club Berlin, Kuckei+Kuckei,...

THURSDAY 14.03   New Kids of the Block @ Tanas –Richtfest group show curated by Ayşe Erkmen +3 points for the guy whose job of the evening was to guard the wire grid piece for safety reasons…He said he was an artist, but not THE artist.     +10 for a student...

Due to the cold generating colds all across Berlin, coverage of this week’s events mostly involved talks where it was possible to sit down in one place for a while and exert minimal energy. Clearly this epidemic didn’t hit everyone though, judging by that video of the line to get into the C/O party. We...

Here is a selection of shows (with a focus on Berlin artists) you should not miss during your trip in New York for the Armory this week. ( and a series of photos and comments to use in conversations in case you do miss them)  Ragnar Kjartansson The Visitors @Luhring Augustine until March 16th I am...

So March is here, spring is coming, the Berghain queue is already almost as long as it is in summer, but apparently people (ok, us included to an extent…) are still a bit lazy when it comes to going to art events. Speaking of Berghain, there’s a work inspired by the artist, Sarah Schönfeld’s...

Last week the dreary weather (-50) didn't stop us from going out to some events. And apparently, we weren't the only ones who refused to spend their weekend under the duvet, and wrapped themselves in their best winter outfits instead(+30)... because what a turn out!. Given the circumstances, namely epic events...
