Jan Tichy - sur•round•things

Jan Tichy is a Chicago-based artist who works at the intersection of video, sculpture, architecture, and photography, and his conceptually based work is socially and politically engaged, reflecting on the surrounding, on the local and immediate. In his show sur-round-things at Circle1 (alongside artist Toony Navok) Tichy is presenting a number of works that respond to different sites and places.

Single channel videos 100RAW and Recess examine in different time based photography approaches the urban and sound scapes of Chicago and Gary, IN; the artist’s residency of the last decade. Site-specific Installation no. 24(Berlin) created for the Berlin gallery resonates with the artist’s first experience of the city 25 years ago, and through exposure of the architectural elements destabilizes the notion of a surrounding. The sculptural wall piece Untitled (flares) suggests a non-place, an expectation; connection.
