Cracks

In this two-person show, the artists explore fissures, cracks and breaks.

Charlotte Bastian’s works focus on how landscapes change. Picture contents include, for instance, the shrinking / melting / breaking of eternal ice, the expansion of deserts or the relentless removal of land that results from mining: different forms of upheaval, caused directly or indirectly by humans. Using different media and modes of perception, Bastian explores the layers and cracks in ice floes, earth and stone masses. In doing so she has found the same structures on both macro and micro levels.

Kerstin Stoll has approached this topic by assembling an extensive collection of fractured materials so as to discover differences, that is, if any exist. The patterns found in crackled glazes on pottery, top layers of parched mud, as well as basalt columns and splintered glass have a geometric-chaotic structure that is governed by a hierarchy. In nature, systems, such as growth, are inherent to mathematical structures. This being so, crack patterns always follows the same schema.
