Conversas Berlin #3

We would like to invite you to join us for the third evening of Conversas Berlin! The start of a weekly series of informal meetings. Our guests for the night are:

Irene Kotnik (The Curves / Petrolettes Festival)
Achim Lengerer (In what way is Scriptings political?)
Michelle Teran (Strategies for reclaiming, La Obra Social)

Irene Kotnik has founded Video Art Channel with Daniela Arriado in 2014. She has extensive experience in film production, new media and moving image. Trained in visual communication and digital imaging and design, she worked for many years in New York as an art director in advertising (establishing brands and supervising vision for e.g. CÎROC® Ultra Premium, luxury jewellery e.g. Harry Winston and high end fashion brands as well as developing communication campaigns for humanitarian organisations e.g. United Nations and Oxfam International). She will talk about 'the Curves', a bunch of female motorcycle enthusiasts based in Berlin.

Achim Lengerer works on political questions of speech and language that he thematizes in his performances, radio plays or spatializes within installations and publications. Lengerer founded different collaborative projects such as freitagsküche in Frankfurt a. M. and voiceoverhead, with artist colleague Dani Gal. Since 2009 Lengerer runs the Berlin-based showroom and publishing house Scriptings. Artists, writers, graphic designers, performers as well as publishers are invited – all of which are working with the formats of script and text within their processes of production. Lengerer is currently writing a Ph.D. on the ‘rehearsal’ as a socio-political as well as an artistic format at Goldsmiths, University of London, UK.

Michelle Teran claims a hybrid practice that links political and social involvement to contemporary art actions. She critically engages media, connectivity and perception in the city, utilizing the language of surveillance, cartography and social networks.
She will talk about her project 'Strategies for reclaiming, La Obra Social' , a campaign initiated by the PAH, a right-to-housing movement operating throughout Spain. The "Obra Social" targets the hundreds of thousands of empty apartment buildings constructed during the Spanish housing bubble and currently unoccupied, using then to relocate individuals and families who had been evicted from their homes.

Conversas Berlin is a series of weekly informal meeting so that we can get to know and discuss a variation of projects and interests.

During the Conversas two/three Conversadores (those who talk at Conversas) bring something to share with the gathered group, for thirty minutes each. As the title suggests itself, Conversas (Conversations in Portuguese) aim at an equal set up from which both the Conversadores and the group, should be able to profit.

Conversas exists of a series of 10 and runs every Thursday until December 1st.

Initiated in Lisbon 2012 by Constança Saraiva and Mafalda Fernandes, Conversas is nowadays a project of many people and cities. Conversas Berlin takes places at a shared studio space, and is co-organized by Sabrina Basten and Sarie Nijboer.
