Black Diamond Bay

The exhibition title refers to an imaginary location in Joseph Conrad’s Victory (1915), as well as to a 1976 song by Bob Dylan: the connection between music and ocean-going is here germane, as Eva Grubinger’s sculptures intertwine references to concert/club culture (with the attendant pharmacological explorations that have historically attended it) and seafaring.

The exhibition comprises an outdoor sculpture: a huge fender looking like a stranded wale, an anchor-ring in the Foyer of Linienstrasse 40 and an installation in L40's exhibition space that unfolds a psychological landscape and a physical or mental journey, escapsism and the search for self, adventure and the testing of limits.
