Ana Bilankov - New Town Future Film, Screening

Set amidst the postindustrial landscape of New York City, the experimental video “New Town Future Film” (2015, 18:30 min.) evokes traveling through time and space. Water, moving ships, cranes, men at work, garbage, industrial architecture, a highway in the background, the Ame- rican flag, darkness, light, beauty - these images evoke the existence of a hybrid non-place located somewhere between a utopian and dystopian vision of the future.

The complex sound in the background mixes poetic language of film and radio fragments thus creating an abstract, parallel narrative. The video also touches upon issues of memory, trauma and loss, jumping back and forth between the future and the past, trying to build a fragile reality of the present.

Inspired by Robert Smithson’s “Proposal for a Monument at Antarctica“.

The film production was funded and supported by: Berlin Senate Cultural Affairs Department; HAVC Croatian Audiovisual Center; Residency Unlimited, Brooklyn, New York; Film/Video Studio Program, Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, Ohio, US.
