24 h sculpture

Curated by Ursula Ströbele in collaboration with Andreas Greiner

Durability and stability – these have always been the primary characteristics of classical sculpture, and so innately, temporality and fugacity are diametrically opposed. Yet, there’s been increasing development of abstract and non-representational sculpture since the beginning of the 20th century, there are, amongst others; the rotoreliefs by Marcel Duchamp (1935), as well as the works of his successors who experimented with kinetic and cybernetic art forms which provoked an extension of the concept of “sculpture.” This development culminated in the processual, performative works of the 1960s and 1970s.

“24 h Sculpture” brings together artistic positions of the present with established references, such as Dennis Oppenheim, Roman Signer and Franz Erhard Walther, who played an important role in the expanded field of sculpture. The exhibition shows how young artists, especially in recent years, have taken and further developed this idea of sculpture based on temporality. “24 h Sculpture” explores how temporality may be articulated in plastic arts and how its spatialization is expressed.
