Music Tips 01.09 - 14.09

When it comes to parties, Berlin never falls short - a fact proven once again with the upcoming events. Hopefully the holidays and festivals did not drain your resources; if so, stay tuned, we will be giving away free tickets for a few of the shows listed below.

THURSDAY 03.09

18.00 VIVA VOCE @ Kleiner Wasserspeicher Berlin (+ afterparty @ ACUD MACHT NEU)

WHY: VIVA VOCE celebrates vocal performance art in an interactive and experimental context. In real-time visitors play and re-compose performance and documentary sequences of stellar vocal artists - Shelley Hirsch, Juliana Snapper, and Pamela Z - by interacting with 3D sonic sculptures, the audience turns into performers themselves. Celebrate the opening of VIVA VOCE at Kleiner Wasserspeicher Berlin, and join the afterparty at ACUD MACHT NEU with Shelley Hirsch (vocals), who is part of the installation, and Joke Lanz (turntables).

Kleiner Wasserspeicher / Diedenhoferstraße, 10405 Berlin, U2 Senefelderplatz / ongoing until 20.09 / more info

18.00 Lifelines: Hans-Joachim Roedelius @ Haus der Kulturen der Welt

WHY: Having hosted Harmonia’s legendary revival concert in 2007, HKW now undertakes an intensive exploration of Roedelius’s work, from music to the visual arts, in this three-day Lifelines program. His diverse creative achievements will be presented and reflected on from various perspectives in discussions, films, an installation, and, above all, concerts. Roedelius will be joined by fellow travelers from his past and present.

20.30 Russo + Torn Hawk + Divine Diamond @ Loophole

WHY: Multidisciplinary artist Russo is the latest visionary to come out of the Valcrond Video fold led by synaesthetic video mulch musician Luke Wyatt (aka Torn Hawk). While Torn Hawk makes hypnotic bleary, hypnotic compositions set to tape and collages of long-forgotten VHS footage, Russo produces tracks that feel a little more sharp-focussed, but work firmly on the sensory borderline between texture and sound. Third act on the bill is Divine Diamond, a project of Berlin based producers Privacy and Alobhe.

Loophole / Boddinstr. 60, 12053 Berlin, U Rathaus Neukölln / more info

THURSDAY 10.09

20.00 Ja Ja Ja Berlin presents Hey Elbow, Axel Flóvent, Lisa Alma @ Flux Bau

WHY: The new Ja Ja Ja concert season starts at Flux Bau with three live acts. The Swedish trio Hey Elbow with a background in jazz and an ear for distortion create weird pop music with a big sound. Axel Flovent’s music can be described as modern folk music; acoustic and low key but bears obvious influences from other forms of music such as indie rock, pop and electronic music. Lisa Alma blends her soothing voice with tranquil piano chords and pulsating electronic beats to create a dream-pop universe.

Flux Bau / Pfuelstraße 5, 10997 Berlin, U Schlesisches Tor / more info

22.00 GRAND JETÉ w/ Iron Curtis, André Lodemann, Chica Paula & The VSQ @ OHM

WHY: For its September edition, the Grand Jete series presents live act by Iron Curtis, and DJ sets by André Lodemann, Chica Paula, and The VSQ. Intertwining Deep-House with soulful Techno, Iron Curtis’ sound moves in the equilibrium of reduced, but never minimal. André Lodemann’s DJ sets are deep and funky discovering the emotional and spiritual depth of Deep House. DJ and producer Chica Paula is rooted in the Berlin club scene, and known as a part of the Ruta5 collective. The VSQ is a producer and curator whose sets are a mix between house, techno and related, always with a few obscure findings.
