Art Berlin opens today with an extensive parallel program in collaborations that reach from the local iniative Berlin Art Prize to Liste ART FAIR BASEL. The program concentrates on the usual three options, talks, screenings and an extensive performance program which we will be presenting in detail here.

On the occasion of art berlin The Performance Agency activates the inflatable temple Pneu (2018) by Viennese artist Selina Traun. The bouncy castle was invented by Austrian entrepreneur Elisabeth Kolarik (* 1954) in 1977. Elisabeth was the youngest daughter of gastronome Karl Kolarik (1901–1993), who founded Europe’s largest beer garden in the Viennese ‘Prater’. She had initially aimed to produce an inflatable playground for her child’s room, but the hot air balloon manufacturer in London misunderstood centimetres for inches, so the playground was two and a half times bigger than planned and could only be used outside. Following this accidental prototype, Elisabeth Kolarik designed many other bouncy castles that would be for sale or to rent and in 1992 she opened the Restaurant “Luftburg” full of various types of jumping castles. Having never patented her idea, her story remains widely unknown. However, the name “Luftburg” is protected by trademark law, so competing products are usually referred to as bouncy castles.

*** THIS MOVIE IS A GIFT,  the new documentary about Daniel Spoerri by Anja Salomonowitz will be presented on Saturday, 14.09.2019 at 11:30 at the fair.

*PERFORMANCE PROGRAM

The Performance Agency from Berlin is a curatorial platform that gathers artists from all genres together within performative happenings. An iteration at art berlin presents the brutalist bouncy-castle of Viennese artist Selina Traun. Hosting performances, soundscapes, and objects, the pneumatic stage draws attention to moments of transformation and invites the audience to experience intermediate spaces for art.
