abc: Upcoming Exhibitions

abc: Upcoming Exhibitions

Upcoming Exhibitions is a conditional project space developed within the parameters of abc art berlin contemporary 2013. Existing wholly for the duration of abc, Upcoming Exhibitions will constitute a program made up of contributions by 14 invited international project spaces. It will allow each participating space two hours to inhabit and exhibit a project of their choosing, amounting to 14 exhibitions, one occurring every two hours within a single space situated near the entrance of abc.

We bring you a preview of participating spaces with some highlights in the order of their scheduling.

PARTICIPATING SPACES

Cleopatra's / cleopatrascleopatras.blogspot.fr /

Cleopatra’s opened in June 2008, and has worked collaboratively with artists and cultural producers to create projects that forge new networks and
dialogues between individuals, art practices, and institutions. After enduring five years as an independent project space, Cleopatra’s will finally introduce itself as a commercial gallery at Upcoming Exhibitions. Employing two performers with iPads to play the role of the gallerist, Cleopatra’s (gallery) will attempt to sell artwork from Cleopatra's archived inventory. At times aggressive and at times coy these performers/dealers will use multiple tactics in an attempt to generate profit for the gallery, though the space will remain void of any artwork.

1857 / www.1857.no /

1857 is an artist-run exhibition space occupying a former lumberyard in Grønland, downtown Oslo. Founded in 2010, 1857 aims to forge connections
between the Norwegian art scene and young artists abroad. Over the years 1857 has developed a tradition of serving specialized cocktails during each of their opening events. These cocktails created by the 1857 staff have become an integral part of 1857’s exhibition reception and history. For Upcoming Exhibitions 1857 will serve a retrospective of these cocktails: 13 cocktails will be concocted and served to the general public.

Bétonsalon / www.betonsalon.net /

Bétonsalon - Centre for art and research aims to ally theory and practice, with the objective of rearticulating the position of research and artistic creation in society. For Upcoming Exhibitions Bétonsalon intends to convert UE’s exhibition space into a temporary reading room and a place of exchange. Bétonsalon has invited artist Katinka Bock to produce a series of small hand-made terracota sculptures. During the days that precede abc’s opening, these works will be scattered in the public space within and surrounding abc,  and are meant to be claimed by whoever is interested in owning one or several of them with only one stated wish in return: in exchange for the sculpture, the new owner would buy a book for Betonsalon’s reading room.

Am Nuden Da / www.amnudenda.com /

Am Nuden Da is a London based project creating situations in which art, and discussions related to art, are given the space to challenge agreed-on structures, often whilst operating within them. Am Nuden Da will present a project in collaboration with the artists Ian Law (1984, UK) and Davide Stucchi (1988, Milan). The artists will alter the dynamics of the architectural space that houses Upcoming Exhibitions by reenacting the seminal work Blaue Dreiecke by Blinky Palermo. Inherently unsuitable and incompatible to Blaue Dreiecke, UE’s space of exhibition will be conditioned via Am Nuden Da, Ian Law, and Davide Stucchi’s interventions in an attempt to collectively accommodate and realize Palermo’s work.

The Ister / www.theister.be /

Established in 2011, The Ister is a peripatetic, Brussels-based cultural association pursuing site-specific projects that mingle cultural disciplines, with an emphasis on working with emerging artists. The Ister is pleased to present You Wanna See Me Put It In the Hole? with participation by Marco Bruzzone (1974, IT/DE), Susan Ploetz (1978, US/DE) and We Are The Painters (1981, FR). In You Wanna See Me Put It In the Hole?, the colloquial and the conversational rub up against the intimate and the surreal to create a collaborative art event with no true backbone. The result is a series of strenuous comic satires of abjectnature, dwelling in free interpretation and loss of direction.
